- Water Vapor Compression – Water is a natural refrigerant, so to say. However, the kind of equipment needed to use water as a refrigerant is so different that they are considered as alternate refrigerant systems. Having a high temperature and latent heat of evaporation makes water an efficient refrigerant system. The only drawback of this refrigerant system is that its has high specific volume. Numerous studies are underway to find a way to overcome this shortfall but it will take a while before this can be initiated as a commercial refrigerant.
- Air Cycle Refrigeration – Air cycle refrigeration systems have a very niche market, with the aircraft industry dominating this technology. The compressed air required to use air as a refrigerant is only available in jet engines. Though air is a natural refrigerant but it being less efficient, it is less likely to be used as a commercial, mainstream refrigerant technology.
- Thermo-electric Refrigeration – Thermo-electric refrigerants entail passing currant through a circular circuit comprising of two dissimilar materials, such that there’s absorption of heat at one junction and rejection of heat on the other. If the materials involved at metals, such as in a thermocouple, the conductivity of the metals is so intense that the apparent cooling and heating effects are negligible. Hence, use of metals with low conductivity here will do the trick, thus providing effective results.
- Magnetic Refrigeration – Magnetic refrigeration is being closely studied for use in commercial and domestic cooling systems. The technology harps on de-magnetizing and magnetizing a special alloy that rotates within a magnetic field. Magnetic refrigeration is able to offer refrigeration temperatures that are suitable for commercial use.
