A refrigerant gas is a chemical, which is used in cooling system for mechanical devices like refrigerators, air conditioners or walk-in freezers. Most of the refrigeration devices depend on chemical reactions of the refrigerant gas to eliminate heat from enclosed area. There actually are numerous gases used as refrigerants. Earlier refrigerants were highly dangerous and toxic chemicals. The new gases that have replaced them are known to be safer, but many of them can still have a harmful effect on the worldwide environment.

Artificial refrigeration by using chemical and mechanical processes started in 19th century. Early home and commercial refrigeration unit used gases like methyl chloride and ammonia. These gases are very toxic and can cause injuries in case they escaped containments or required maintenance. Due to this, most refrigerant gases of early times are not in use now.
